"We are led by the Holy Spirit to merge and create new opportunities for ourselves to do God’s work with excitement and a new-found vision for sharing our love of Christ with all those we touch, whether in worship, outreach, or prayer. We strive to continually evolve into one community of faith, where we study scripture, worship, help each other heal, grow in faith, hope and love, and put our commitment to do Christ’s work into each of our daily actions. Over the years we have tried on fancier Mission Statements,
but for now we have settled on:
Meet God and Friends Here
On Ash Wednesday 2023, Pastor Katie brought a pothos plant to worship. The poor bedraggled creature had two and a half leaves left on a single scraggly stem, and we didn't think it was going to make it.
Six weeks later, on Easter Sunday, the pothos plant had one new stem and a total of six healthy looking leaves and the still forlorn half leaf that never quite healed. It was an Easter miracle! And it reminded us, in the middle of a pandemic and a lot of struggles in our lives, that healing and thriving is possible, even if you are down to your last scraggly stem and two and a half leaves.
That summer we were invited by the Rev. Micah Nutter Dowling at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Buffalo, to support a concert for LGBTQ+ youth featuring the artist Semler. Our Mission Committee was delighted to sponsor the event and they asked us for a logo. We sent them a picture of our pothos plant and the Rev. Katelyn Nutter Dowling created our new logo as a gift to us.
And so we are reminded by the pothos plant that we need good lighting and water and nutrients in order to thrive, and that God offers all of that through the love that pours through our relationships with one another. In 1 John, chapter 4 John the Evangelists urges us: "Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God...No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us."
